What Does Spotify Joining ChatGPT Means for Artists?

This month, Spotify announced it was now able to join ChatGPT conversations on both desktop and mobile, capable of responding to prompts and providing personalised music and podcast recommendations. But what does this look like and what does this mean for artists?

How it works:

  1. To get Spotify to join a ChatGPT conversation, you’ll need to mention Spotify in your prompt
  2. For a first time user, you will be prompted to connect your Spotify account
  3. Then request ChatGPT for music or podcast suggestions and either ask based on a specific song, album, artist, playlist, or podcast episode or based on a mood, theme or topic. Either option will prompt Spotify to open within the chat and present its personalised picks.
  4. Tapping a track or episode presented will automatically open the Spotify app, allowing you to instantly watch or listen to your recommendations.

For users connecting a free Spotify account, ChatGPT will source recommendations from Spotify’s own playlist catalog including Discover Weekly and New Music Friday. Spotify Premium users will be able to use more elaborate and personalised prompts and can even form prompts based off their own listening habits e.g. “Make a playlist with some Latin artists that are on my heavy rotation.”

What does this mean for artists?

This new feature, available in 145 countries, sees ChatGPT grow as a source of music recommendation and discovery, as many users seek a more personalised streaming experience. According to Spotify, they will not share music, podcasts or any other audio and video content with ChatGPT and OpenAI for training purposes. Although how users respond to this new feature is yet to be seen, it's clear AI is here to stay in the music industry. AI music recommendation is a space worth keeping an eye on for all artists, particularly as Spotify refines its personalisation technology over the coming months.
